£26m paid to property con victims Victims of so-called property title theft in England and Wales have been paid more than £26 million in compensation since 2006, Land Registry figures have revealed. The con takes place when criminals manage to arrange mortgages for properties they do not own before taking the cash and disappearing. The real owner is then left with thousands of pounds of mortgage debts.
